Customisation: meeting specific tenant requirements

The adaptability of HeatSage, Connected Response’s smart storage heating controls, and ongoing technical support enables the technology to be configured to meet each customer’s specific requirements and to flex over time as those requirements change.

The Challenge

  • A block of twelve one-bedroom flats
  • Flats managed by a national social care charity
  • Tenants classed as ‘vulnerable’ requiring support for long-term mental health conditions
  • Economy 7 tariff provides a single off-peak overnight charging window
  • Tenants incurring extremely high energy bills due to ‘boosting’ heating in the afternoon and evening at peak rates

The Solution

  • HeatSage smart storage heating and hot water controls installed in each flat
  • With the support of the social care charity, tenants chose to move to an Economy10 tariff giving three off-peak charging windows
  • Charging profiles determined by tenant preference, and optimised by:
    • Intelligent weather compensation – using the following day’s projected temperature to adjust charging
    • Understanding of the differential temperatures across the building e.g. flats facing south-east are warmer than those facing south-west

Feedback from charity care manager on site:

‘When the Connected Response system was first explained to me it sounded like something from science fiction!

Tenants’ monthly heating bills have gradually reduced and savings are currently around the 30% mark.

One tenant continued to heat their flat to around 27°C which impacted both their physical and mental health. Working with the Connected Response Engagement Team, the temperature in the flat has been gradually reduced in small steps over a two-month period. The tenant has not experienced any material difference; other than a much reduced heating bill and feeling more active.’
