Connected Response’s HeatSage technology has been shortlisted for the Regional Small Scale Project of the Year in the Energy Efficiency Awards 2026.

HeatSage retrofit smart electric heating controls were installed by Newcastle City Council in Vale House, a tower block with 138 flats. The objective was to provide residents with an improved heating experience and to reduce energy usage.

Colin White, Newcastle City Council, provided the following commentary on the impact HeatSage smart electric heating controls have had on the lives of tenants:

‘Newcastle manages just over 1,500 flats across 17 blocks, many of which still rely on old-style electric storage
heaters as their primary heating source. We partnered with Connected Response to install the HeatSage system in
Vale House, our over 55s block in South Jesmond with 138 flats.

The installation was quick and straightforward, and because it was carried out by our own electricians, we now have
a full understanding of the system. This has allowed us to focus our resources on supporting tenants, helping them
get comfortable with the new heating controls and encouraging them to use the dedicated aftercare service.

Our post installation assessment and tenant feedback show that the new controls have made a real difference.
Homes are more comfortable, with reduced overheating, and tenants are using less energy on warmer days.
HeatSage has also helped us identify where some residents are not yet using the system to its full potential, allowing
us to provide targeted training and extra support.

Given the positive impact, we are now reviewing our wider housing stock to identify the next blocks suitable for
retrofit, with the aim of having additional installations in place before the next heating season.’
