Meet the team:
Toby Hocking

Toby Hocking

Originally working with Connected Response on a part-time basis, Toby has been a full-time member of the team for just over twelve months. Toby’s contribution is primarily technical, working alongside Martin (Martin Ade-Hall – Technical Director) to support both day-to-day operations as well as testing new firmware and hardware. Toby also supports David (Customer Engagement Manager), responding to technical questions as they arise.

Graduating in mechanical engineering from the University of Bath, Toby has worked in mechanical, process and software engineering roles across a diverse range of sectors including the railways and banking:

‘Although I had already encountered much of the technology used in the HeatSage system before I joined, there has still been a lot to learn. For example, LoRa and Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) were completely new to me, and I have had to build a much deeper understanding of Zigbee wireless technology.’

On a day-to-day basis, Toby acts as a second line of support for HeatSage technical issues facilitating the work of Connected Response’s project teams and installers on the ground. His work also includes rolling out networks to new sites, network maintenance and ensuring databases are up-to-date:

‘We are always looking to improve and extend the technologies we use. In particular, we are constantly testing new firmware and hardware. In the future, I hope to have the opportunity to further extend the Connected Response portfolio of technology solutions into the renewable energy sector. There is so much more that can be done to optimise the use of green energy in the UK.’

Toby could, literally, do his job standing on his head. He has been learning and teaching modern circus skills for most of his adult life. His particular areas of expertise are the flying trapeze, aerial straps and the Chinese pole. Toby is also passionate about making ice cream out of whatever seasonal ingredients are available; rhubarb and ginger is a particular favourite.

Wherever possible, Toby’s preferred mode of transport is his bicycle. He pedals around 300km each month on Connected Response business, using his knowledge of Glasgow to avoid the city centre congestion and delays.

Toby’s Recommendation: Seek out a contemporary circus performance near you. Often the smaller, intimate venues allow you to see the skill and physicality close-up.
